Venice – Lunardelli is pleased to present a collaborative exhibition of new and recent bronze sculpture and painting works by Native American artist Addison Karl, alongside the artesian work of Lunardelli at its Calle Seconda del Cristo, 2210a, 30125, in Venice. On view from the 2nd to the 30th of June, Addison’s first exhibition in Venice features bronze sculpture and painting works that reflect traditional Chickasaw and Choctaw methods of creating. Initiated on blank paper, notes, and sketches, the works find themselves on canvas, sculpture, installation, and embedded in public space. Addison shares his people’s stories through a figurative narrative, while using traditional materials, beadwork, patterns, and perseverance references - perseverance in the face of hardship may be the unifying characteristic of native peoples. Deeply informed by histories of cultural production in Chickasaw and Choctaw heritage, the artist’s work unites traditional methodologies, establishing new dialogues across time, place, and medium.

Pulling references from personal interactions, nature, culture, history of humanity, altruism, color perception, and emotional states, the execution of Addison’s visual library is deeply rooted in the methods of creation. The artist employs patterned rhythms and turquoise as part of his people’s heritage of perseverance, referencing their Nations’ effigies, pottery, shell carving, gorgets, and traditional tattooing.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Addison produced a catalog Lost Wax, that is available to buy at the exhibition and online here.

Addison Karl (b. 1982, Denver and raised in Phoenix, Arizona) invokes Indigenous artisanal legacies and figurative narratives in his multi-faceted practice that encompasses paintings, sculptures, installations, and public art. The artist emphasizes process, gesture, and the qualities inherent to his materials. After 15 years of running his own Printmaking studio, Addison has adopted the use of metals and casting tools and techniques as integral to his self-taught practice. Addison’s ongoing determination to keep learning about both traditional Chickasaw and Choctaw methods of creating, as well as contemporary painting and sculpture techniques, reveals through his work as he creates a visual narrative that responds to his heritage of being a Culture Bearer. A pictorial narrative of altruism, Addison’s integration of craft-based labor and process-based art positions his work in a unique dialogue with a complex history of material and artistic production.

He is the awardee of the 2022 Artist Residency Program at Amazon Headquarters in Seattle and 2019 Artists in Business Leadership Fellowship Grant - First Peoples Fund; and the recipient of multiple awards for sculpture (2021 Southeastern Art Show and Market Chickasaw Nation, Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market; 2020 Tony Stones Award Commended from the Society of Portrait Sculptors; 2019 Southeastern Art Show, and Market Chickasaw Nation).

Lunardelli Venezia has been creating wooden furnishings that express the soul of the lagoon of Venice since 1967. The creations explore multiple facets of the city, combining wood with other historic and noble materials. In doing so, its creations reinterpret the history of the island while amplifying its potential with a modern approach to design and production. Lunardelli Venezia launched its first line of products during the Venetian Glass Week in 2018. An important facet of the collection was an exploration of the combination of traditional wood cabinetry with iconic Murano glass. Its mission draws upon the skills of local craftspeople and designers to materialize its contemporary vision while always stressing the importance of keeping the lagoon’s tradition alive.
